Highlanders Sprinkle a Little History into Doubleheader Sweep

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside kicked off senior weekend on Friday afternoon in dominant fashion at Amy S. Harrison Field, sweeping the doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield with wins of 6-0 and 7-2.

UCR now owns a seven-game win streak over the Roadrunners dating back to 2020 after winning its sixth game in its last seven overall and 13th in the last 15 against Bakersfield.

Jackie Alday led the way in both ends of the doubleheader, going 5 for 5 combined across both games with six RBI and a pair of runs. Alday's game two stat line saw her record four RBI for the second time this season, a week and a half after becoming the first Highlander freshman to do so in a game since 2017.

Alday led off the second inning of game one with a solo home run, and after an RBI single in game two, has now hit safely in 13 of her last 15 games. The freshman is now tied with Gigi Araki for the team lead at five, the most for a Highlander freshman since Araki hit four in 2021.

Maddie Heinlin had a career day in the circle against Bakersfield in game, throwing a four-hit shutout to go with a career-high 11 strikeouts for the sophomore - number 11, fittingly, closed out game one for UCR's sixth straight win over the Roadrunners. Heinlin now has four games this season with at least eight strikeouts, but Friday's game one was her first in Big West action.

Heinlin put on a pitching clinic for UC Riverside in the series for the second straight year, after Chrys Hildebrand came one out away from a perfect game in Bakersfield last season. Brooke Perez took to the circle in game two, picking up the win to become the first Highlander freshman pitcher with 10 wins since Stephanie Marshall in 2006.

UC Riverside will go for the sweep on Saturday afternoon with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch on ESPN+.
