Women’s Soccer Downs Hawaii for Second Straight Big West Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside improved to 2-0-0 in Big West play on Sunday night with a 1-0 win over Hawaii at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR's first shot of the evening was nearly the opener, as Aaliya Tu'ua went just over the bar in the 11th minute. Spenser Gonzales and Arianna Dominguez generated back-to-back on-target shots in the 22nd and 23rd minutes.
  • Amelie Araya tallied the night's lone goal in the 31st minute, heading a ball in after it bounced around in the box off of a set piece. The Highlanders went into the break with a halftime lead for the third time this season and second straight game.
  • UCR's back line held Hawaii without a shot in the second half until the 74th minute. Both sides were level with eight shots apiece on the night, but the Highlanders limited UH to just two attempts in the second half.
  • Lexie Yela made her first appearance since September 10 with two shots off the bench in Sunday's win. Reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Week Daphane Mendez also contributed a pair of attempts as a substitute.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sunday was a night of long-awaited firsts for UC Riverside. The Highlanders tallied their first win over Hawaii since 2017, but more importantly, the victory over the Rainbow Wahine also gave UCR both its first 2-0-0 Big West start and the program's first back-to-back conference victories since 2017.
  • Sunday's 1-0 win also secured two results to start Big West play for the second straight season after a pair of draws last year.
  • Cassia Souza tallied her sixth career clean sheet, entering a tie for fifth all-time in program history after needing to make just three saves.
  • Tu'ua was rewarded with her second straight start after logging her first career assist in Friday's conference-opening win, almost capitalizing with the 11th-minute near miss.
  • Spenser Gonzales recorded an assist for the second straight match and her third goal involvement of the season overall.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside will take its Big West schedule on the road for the first time in 2023, traveling to UC Santa Barbara for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, September 28 on ESPN+.
