Highlanders Fall at UC Davis

Pair of late goals dooms UCR in Northern California

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Riverside played UC Davis tough for 80 minutes on Thursday until a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes became the difference in a 2-0 defeat at Aggie Soccer Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UC Riverside emerged from the gate with the initial spell of possession for the opening five minutes.  
  • Macie Baird provided defensive pressure in the box in the 12th minute before Allee Grashoff made quick work of her first close encounter in net.  
  • UCR avoided disaster in the 29th minute ahead of a near own goal before the Highlanders cleared the ensuing corner. Grashoff saved a close-range attempt in the 31st minute.  
  • The Highlanders' wall did its job in the 36th minute as UCR cleared another ball out of danger following a free kick. Grashoff and the four in front of her were called on again late in the first half before seeing out a successful final minutes of the half.  
  • UC Riverside was forced into a defensive mindset out of halftime before briefly crossing into the attacking half 10 minutes in. Davis nearly opened the scoring a few minutes later with a hit crossbar and a shot over the bar.  
  • The Aggies stayed on the attack for a period of time before opening the scoring in the 80th minute and doubling the lead in the 83rd.  

NOTABLES 

  • Thursday's setback snapped UCR's run of three draws in its last four matches.  
  • Grashoff made four saves in goal while Selena Hernandez and Sanaa Guyness each logged a shot.
