Men’s Soccer Draws with UC Davis

Hastings scores his first of the season

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside played to a 1-1 draw with UC Davis on Saturday night at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside opened Saturday's contest facing constant pressure from an Aggie side set on opening the scoresheet early, pushing away a trio of blocked shots in the first 12 minutes.
  • Possession numbers then flipped, and the Highlanders controlled the ball in the latter portion of the first half. UCR's persistence earned them three corners in five minutes after seeing none in the previous 35.
  • Once settled on the ball, UCR's attack frequented the left wing for much of the first half. Luka Lukic raced down the sideline in the 30th minute and sent a cross into no man's land, then Oscar Emilio Trujillo Lizarraga played a ball on the same line with a touch too much speed before it rolled over the end line.
  • Edward Castro marked Wes Hastings for goal with a volleyed cross in the 41st minute that Hastings sent high over the bar. The junior redeemed himself in the 47th, setting his feet before burying his first goal of the season into the top corner for the 1-0 lead.
  • Lukic almost found the net for the fifth time this season in the 65th minute when Lukas Juodkunaitis whipped a left-footed cross that grazed the Serbian's head.
  • Carlos Gonzalez poked a shot clear in the 71st minute, thanks in no part to a high level of difficulty from already being on his side.
  • UC Davis continued to mount pressure as the minutes wound down and equalized in the 85th minute.

NOTABLES

  • Hastings' strike is the eighth for UCR this season in the first 10 minutes of a half. The junior has also scored against the Aggies in back-to-back home meetings.
  • Five of Lukic's six goal contributions have come within the first 15 minutes of a half.
  • Carlos Gonzalez passed Charles Alamo for third on the program's all-time list with his 68th career start.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside now begins its final road trip of the season with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at UC San Diego on Wednesday, October 26.
