Highlanders Down Irvine on Historic Night, 1-0

UC Riverside claims first home win of 2024 in dramatic fashion

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside defeated UC Irvine 1-0 in front of a sold-out crowd on Wednesday's Latin Heritage Night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wednesday's match started primarily in the middle third with just five shots combined through the first 19 minutes. Lukas Juodkunaitis nearly opened the scoring in the third with a laser just high of the cross bar.
  • Juodkunaitis fired another shot in the 24th after Oscar Emilio Trujillo Lizarraga attempted a go in the 19th minute of play.
  • UCR ramped up the offense in the 51st minute with a shot from Jackson D'Alessandro, one of three to come from the Highlanders in the next 10 minutes.
  • Chaos ensued in the 58th minute with a red card to Irvine's goalkeeper, forcing a field player to take his place between the sticks. UCR ramped up its offense in the final third, continuously working the ball around to try and find a clear shot on goal.
  • The Anteaters implemented a high press in the final 15 minutes, but UC Riverside kept chopping on the back line to limit Irvine's chance creation.
  • Ethan Gonzalez opened his UCR scoring account on the biggest of stages in the 89th minute. Westley Hastings and Jackson D'Alessandro played a ball down the right side and flung it into the middle, where Gonzalez sprinted in and booted home the go-ahead strike.

NOTABLES

  • UC Riverside picked up its first win at home this season and first home clean sheet in Big West play since last year's scoreless draw against CSUN.
  • Carlos Gonzalez passed Charles Alamo for most clean sheets in program history with number 17 against the Anteaters. Gonzalez also tied Ashkan Khosravi for most wins all time and moved into a tie for fourth with his 65th career start.
  • UCR has now won two of the last three meetings with UC Irvine with both wins coming as home clean sheets.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside will look to continue the momentum on Saturday, October 12 with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Cal Poly.
