Highlanders keep chopping for gritty road win

LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Riverside made an emphatic return to the road on Friday night at Walter Pyramid with a dramatic 3-2 win at Long Beach State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in set one that was tail ended by a 3-0 scoring run, but Long Beach State ended set one on a 5-0 run to take a 25-23 win. Trinity Sheridan recorded six of UCR's 13 kills in the set.
  • The Highlanders evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 win of their own in set two, hitting .294 while limiting Long Beach State to .182.
  • UCR and the Beach traded sets three and four. UC Riverside went on a 4-0 scoring run in set three to distance itself in the set for good after Sophia Ewalefo's ace made it 18-14.
  • The Highlanders struggled to contain Long Beach in set four, falling 25-14 before facing their fifth five-set match of the season.
  • UC Riverside brushed aside two match points in a dramatic fifth set that featured 11 ties and six lead changes. The Highlanders trailed 14-12 before digging deep for the 4-0 scoring run that sealed the win.
