Broncos Top Highlanders in Boise

BOISE, Idaho - The Highlanders looked to bounce back from a tough loss at Fresno State earlier in the week as UCR traveled to Boise State to take on the Broncos. Tonight the Highlanders sought their first win over the Broncos, as UCR dropped its previous two meetings. The Highlanders also looked for their first road win of the year. Entering tonight's contest, junior guard Shelley Duchemin is the only Highlander averaging double figures in points (14.3) and senior forward Esther Matarranz leads the way in rebounding (6.3).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Highlanders and the Broncos traded buckets in the first quarter with both Duchemin and Seneca Hackley pouring in four each. Kaylani Polk added the lone three for UCR, and the Highlanders trailed by three at the end of one. Hackley shot and made the only two free throws for UCR.
  • In the second, Duchemin started where she left off scoring the first four points, including two free throws for UCR. Maya Chocano buried an early three giving UCR a one point advantage. The Highlanders outscored the Broncos 7-3 to start the quarter. Right when UCR took the lead, Boise State came back with a quick 8-0 run of their own to take a seven point lead. Eventually, the Broncos ended the first half leading, 35-27.
  • It was a tough start to the third quarter as Boise State went on a 13-0 run. The Broncos would eventually increase the lead to 21 before UCR chipped away. The Highlanders tried to get back into it, but still trailed the Broncos 57-42 at the end of three.
  • The fourth quarter started with both teams trading baskets and no extended runs. The Broncos would maintain their 15-point lead as they topped the Highlanders, 72-57.

NOTABLES

  • Two Highlanders ended up in double figures, Duchemin (16) and Seneca Hackley (10). Duchemin scored in double figures in all four games.
  • UCR's bench outscored Boise State's bench 27-21. The Highlanders' bench outscored their opponents each game this year.
  • Gemma Cutler lead the Highlanders on the boards grabbing 10 rebounds, a new season high.
