Highlanders Put Exclamation Point on 2024 with Senior Day Win

UCR snaps 11-match skid to Gauchos in 2024 finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside saved some of its most exciting volleyball of the season for Saturday's 2024 finale with a 3-1 win over UC Santa Barbara.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UC Riverside caught fire in set one at a good time, going on a 9-2 run after trailing 17-13. UCR finished the set on a 12-3 run to take a 1-0 set lead.  
  • A late Highlander run was a repeat occurrence in set two. Two kills from Trinity Sheridan and one from Carissa Wiles energized a 6-1 Highlander run at the tail end of the second set. Jessica Dean stretched the run into 8-2 with an ace to tie the set at 22.  
  • UCR hit a blistering .382 in set two to take a commanding 2-0 lead over the Gauchos. Sheridan put down seven kills in the frame to lead the Highlanders. 
  • The Highlanders were denied the sweep with a 25-15 defeat in set three.  
  • UC Riverside tied set four at 14 with a Kailyn Jager kill down the line, one point after a marathon rally that went the Highlanders' way.  
  • Hands at the net came in clutch late in the fourth, as three consecutive Gaucho attack errors gave UCR a commanding 23-19 lead in set four. 
  • UC Riverside closed out the win on an 8-3 run, finalized by Mia Delahoussaye's 10th kill of the evening.  

NOTABLES 

  • The Highlanders snapped an 11-match losing streak to UC Santa Barbara. UCR's .218 hitting percentage against the Gauchos was the second highest in a home match this year. 
  • UCR secured its first 10-win season since 2017.  
  • UC Riverside outhit its opponent in set one for the second consecutive match. The Highlanders got out to a two-set lead over Santa Barbara for the first time since November 2017.  
  • Sheridan finished a remarkable debut season with the most kills in a season for UC Riverside since 2012. Delahoussaye was one kill shy of tying a career high.
