Highlanders Roll Past Cougars on the Road

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - For the first time in school history the Highlanders took on Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars hail from the CCAA and entered tonight's game winless in five tries. Coming into the game they were led in scoring by Camille Johnson who averaged 15 ppg. Tonight marked the fifth road game of the month for UCR.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Highlanders jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead behind two layups by Seneca Hackley and Shelley Duchemin. After Makayla Rose hit a jumper the Highlanders went without a bucket for more than two minutes until Hannah Wickstrom buried a three to tie it up at nine. UCR went on another cold streak not scoring for nearly three minutes until Duchemin made another layup. The Cougars took a 16-11 first quarter lead.
  • The Highlanders started the second quarter on a 7-0 run. Duchemin got things going in the second when she hit a three cutting the Cougar lead to two. Jordyn Marshall tied the game on a layup and the Cougar lead was erased. Both teams would trade baskets to end the first half and San Marcos would take a one point lead into the break, 24-23.
  • The third quarter started like the second quarter ended, both teams trading baskets. With the game knotted at 32, the Highlanders went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three pointer from Wickstrom. The Highlanders ended the third on a 12-2 run taking a 44-34 lead into the fourth.
  • Wickstrom hit a three to start the fourth quarter and UCR was off to the races. UCR pushed the lead to 54-38 midway through the fourth and was able to hold off a late run by the Cougars to win, 54-46.
