Highlanders Overpower Aggies; Win Fifth Straight

LOGAN, Utah - The Highlanders were on the road again, this time in the Beehive State taking on the Utah State Aggies. UCR entered the game on a four game win streak, with its last win recorded at Cal State Fullerton. This was the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools, with UCR winning last season 52-51. In that game Matehya Bryant led all scorers with 21 points on 9-13 shooting and grabbed 15 boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Aggies scored first on an opening layup by Carlie Latta. Then the Highlanders roared back with three threes hit by Zoe Tillery, Makayla Rose and Hannah Wickstrom. Tillery would hit her second three of the first giving UCR an early 12-4 lead. Both teams matched shots and UCR's lead was cut to 14-12. The back-and-forth continued until the end of the quarter with UCR on top 20-16.
  • The offense went a bit cold for both teams to start the second. Five total points were scored between the two teams in the first four minutes of the quarter, but UCR had a 23-18 lead. The last six minutes of the second, the Highlanders went on a 14-8 run led by Wickstrom's six points. She would end up with nine in the first half and Tillery chipped in eight. UCR would take a 37-26 lead at the half.
  • Wickstrom got the scoring started in the third hitting a three and the Highlanders were off. UCR would go on a 12-5 run to start the third and build a 16-point lead, 49-33. During that run UCR was 5-for-9 from the floor including 2-for-4 from distance. Both teams would cool off a bit and UCR took a 55-41 lead at the end of three.
  • Shelley Duchemin got the scoring started in the fourth when she hit a layup giving UCR a 57-41 lead. The Highlander offense cooled down again and Utah State went on 13-6 run of their own to cut the lead to 63-54. The Highlanders answered back with their own 9-2 run and pushed the lead to 72-56. Eventually, UCR would seal the deal and win its fifth straight, 74-59.
