Softball Secures Crosstown Showdown Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside secured early bragging rights in the spring Crosstown Showdown on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-2 win at Amy S. Harrison Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Alexis Galvan was in her rhythm out of the gate with a breezy 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, throwing strikes for 24 of her first 27 pitches.
  • CBU struck first in the fourth, but UCR put up a three spot in the bottom half of the frame. Kat Montuya led off the fourth with a single and Jackie Alday followed suit with a double down the left field line. Gigi Araki drew a 3-1 walk and chased CBU's pitcher from the circle, but the damage wasn't done.
  • UC Riverside made the Lancers pay with a fielding error and two fielder's choices, bringing home three runs for the inning.
  • Briza Blanco entered the circle fifth in relief of Galvan and made quick work of the top of CBU's order in 1-2-3 fashion.
  • UC Riverside scored three runs on five hits in the sixth. Elise Nishimura laid down a bunt single to move Leah Brito over to second and Brito eventually scored on another big play from a UCR freshman, as Emma Tolley collected her first career RBI on a single to left.

COACHES' CORNER

  • "It was really good to see the offense make adjustments at the plate and trust their process. We had a lot of good team hitting today, took advantage of opportunities and made some big-time plays on defense. It was great to see overall consistency defensively between our pitchers and the players behind them to help keep us at a high level and secure the win." - UC Riverside head coach Nikki Palmer

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tolley's RBI in her collegiate debut opened the gates for UCR, securing a four-run advantage on the freshman's first hit of her career.

UP NEXT

  • UCR is headed to the Sunshine State for four days of softball at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Florida.
