Highlanders Split Sunday Against Nevada, Utah Valley

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside split Sunday's games at the Riverside Sports Complex with a 13-3 loss to Nevada, followed by an 8-4 bounceback win over Utah Valley.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside quickly answered three Nevada runs in the third, taking two of its own in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run RBI single from Dominic Martinez. Martinez took the first pitch he saw up the middle to put UCR within striking distance.
  • Bubba Rocha picked up an RBI in the fifth on a single to score Jayden Lopez. Rocha finished his first series with the Highlanders going 3 for 9 against Nevada with a pair of RBIs.
  • Rudy Rodriguez also impressed in his first UCR series, going 4 for 7 against the Wolf Pack with four RBIs.
  • UCR used its fourth different starting pitcher of the weekend in a rescheduled game against Utah Valley in the nightcap, giving the ball to freshman righty Kurt Marton.
  • Cole Koniarsky picked up his fourth RBI of the weekend on a sacrifice fly to left in the sixth that scored Anthony Mata.
  • UCR pushed its lead to 4-1 on a wild pitch that scored Zachary Chamizo and later strung together a four-run seventh for an 8-1 lead.

COACHES' CORNER

  • "I'm really proud of how we competed today after dropping that first game of the doubleheader. Kurt Marton was phenomenal tonight, going out there as a freshman with 6.0 innings and only giving up one hit. All credit goes to Kurt in the way that he pitched. I can't be any more proud the guys for competing and bouncing back." - Head coach Justin Johnson

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Marton enjoyed a stellar collegiate debut on Sunday night at the Plex with 6.0 innings while yielding just a hit and a run and racking up nine strikeouts.
  • Jayden Lopez went 3 for 4 against the Wolverines with a run and two RBIs while Zachary Chamizo, Nick Poss and Tyler Martinez all collected multiple hits on the night.
