Buzzer Beater Gives UCR Overtime Win over Cal Poly

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside hurdled over an 11-point fourth quarter deficit and used an overtime buzzer beater from Jordyn Marshall to down Cal Poly in overtime, 62-60, on Saturday night inside the SRC Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR overcame a slow defensive start and ended the first quarter of play down just three. Julia Stenberg hit a triple from up top as the frame wound down, her third in her last two games in a resurgence out of a cold spell from deep.
  • The Highlanders faced a 10-point deficit at the half, but shot 50% in the fourth quarter to erase what would become an 11-point hole.
  • UCR slowly but sure began to erase said deficit and Makayla Jackson put her personal stamp on the comeback with a three to pull the Highlanders within one at 0:23. UC Riverside finally came to even terms on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws from Marshall with 16 seconds left in regulation.
  • Jordan Webster was unable to get a final shot off and UCR advanced to overtime for the first time this season. UCR, however, upended Cal Poly 8-2 in second chance points in the second half.
  • Marshall turned it on in overtime, scoring seven of her 11 points in the extra period and providing the exclamation point on an inbound play that turned into the winning shot at the buzzer.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UCR has now won 11 of its last 14 games overall and three straight against Cal Poly for the first time since 2016-17.
  • UC Riverside also grabbed its 10th home win for the first time since 2015-16 and just its second win this year when trailing with five minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Marshall entered Saturday averaging just 1.7 points per game in conference play, but was one point shy of a career high against the Mustangs.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside returns to the floor on Saturday, March 2 for a 9:00 p.m. tipoff at Hawai'i on ESPN+.
