High-Powered Offense Returns Highlanders to Win Column

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside snapped a three-game skid on Tuesday night at the Riverside Sports Complex with an offense-fueled 13-9 win over San Diego State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Aztecs sprung to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but UCR responded immediately with an RBI double from Jayden Lopez.
  • The Highlanders continued to threaten with the bases loaded and just one out, putting another run on the board with a Dominic Martinez single through the left side.
  • UCR loaded the bases once more in the second just as fast as Cole Koniarsky could clear them, as the junior righty took a 1-2 pitch off the right field wall to give UC Riverside its first lead of the night at 5-3 with no outs.
  • The Highlander tacked another run on in the fourth, and after a defensive four innings, UCR used back-to-back doubles to build a six-run lead at 13-7.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Highlanders are 1-0 in midweek play for the second straight season.
  • UCR posted a seven-run inning for the second consecutive game after Zach Tallerman doubled into right field in the second inning.
  • Lopez and Martinez each went 3 for 4 against SDSU with a run and three RBIs. The duo were two of four Highlanders to record three RBIs on the night while Lopez collected his second three-hit game of the year.
  • UCR's six doubles on Tuesday night were the most in a game for the program since 2018.

COACHES' CORNER

  • "I couldn't be more proud of how the guys bounced back from this weekend," head coach Justin Johnson said. "It was phenomenal. Jayden (Lopez) and Dom (Martinez) had great games offensively and our offense was phenomenal all night. I just can't be more proud of the way we battled back, especially after falling behind down. To come back and get that win was outstanding and we showed a lot of heart tonight."

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside will split a weekend series with Pepperdine, March 1-3. Game one against the Waves will be Friday, March 1 in Malibu. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. from Eddy D. Field Stadium on ESPN+.
