Softball Drops Doubleheader to Open Amy S. Harrison Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside dropped both games of a doubleheader to open the annual Amy S. Harrison Classic on Friday with a 6-2 loss to Nevada and a 4-2 loss to Southern Utah at Amy S. Harrison Field.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Kat Montuya did the honors of putting UCR on the scoreboard first with a solo home run to right center field in the first.  
  • UC Riverside made it 2-0 in the third with an RBI single from Lauryn Garewal that the fifth year stretched into a double before Nevada went ahead with a three-run home run in the fourth. Nevada added a fourth run in the fifth inning on a play at the plate.  
  • Maddie Heinlin enjoyed a stellar first few innings in UCR's first game of the weekend, throwing 25 of her first 29 pitches for strikes with three strikeouts.  
  • Montuya belted her second home run of the day in the third inning of the day's finale against Southern Utah – a two-run shot – to put UC Riverside within a run.  
  • UCR loaded the bases in the seventh against the Thunderbirds with a clear look at stealing the win. 

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS 

  • UC Riverside has now scored in the first inning in three straight games and eight games overall this season.  
  • Trendee Kahunahana and Haylee Lindsey both made their collegiate debuts for UCR on Friday afternoon.

  • UC Riverside will finish the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch against Nevada.
