Softball Falls at Cal Poly in Series Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Riverside fell, 1-0, on Sunday in the series finale of a three-game set with Cal Poly at Bob Janssen Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sunday's series finale was a clinic in pitching and defense for the majority of the afternoon.
  • Kat Montuya reached second in the first inning after stealing her seventh base of the year and second of Big West play.
  • UC Riverside continued to threaten in the second with runners at first and second by way of a leadoff single and a hit by pitch.
  • Cal Poly put runners on second and third in the bottom half, but fielding prowess from Rebeca Cabezas and Montuya forced the Mustangs to go down without doing any damage.
  • The Highlanders loaded the bases in the fifth, beginning with Kamryn Davis working a seven-pitch full count only to reach on an error. Lauryn Garewal walked with two outs and Montuya came up clutch again with an infield single to put a runner 60 feet from home.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Montuya went 3 for 3 in the series finale for her first three-hit game of the season, third of her career and second all-time against Cal Poly.
  • Maddie Heinlin threw her first complete game of the season with 6.0 innings pitched on Sunday.

UP NEXT

  • UCR turns its attention now to next weekend's Big West series at Cal State Fullerton. First pitch for game one against the Titans is slated for Friday, March 29 at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
