Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series vs. Saint Mary’s

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside finished its final non-conference series of the season on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field with a pair of 4-1 and 1-0 wins over Saint Mary's.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lauryn Garewal led off the bottom of the first in game one with a single and scored on a double from Nadia Witt on UCR's next at bat.
  • UCR put up another two spot in the fourth on a two-run home run from Eta Lauti.
  • Bella Scozzola showed off her arm behind the dish to start game two, catching a Gael stealing at second after the Highlanders stranded a pair of Saint Mary's runners on second and third in the first inning.
  • Kat Montuya went 2 for 2 in the back end of the doubleheader with a stolen base in the first while Brooke Perez recorded the complete game win.
  • Zara Wasserman pinch hit for Eta Lauti in the fifth and delivered a double into left center, at which point Alyssa Alano relieved her at second. Alano scored the game's only run later in the inning on a Garewal single.
  • Saint Mary's threatened to tie things up in the seventh with two runners on, but Maddie Heinlin shut down the Gaels to give UCR its second straight win.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UCR now carries momentum into Big West play in the form of back-to-back non-conference wins.
  • Montuya's on-base streak reached 11 games after doubling to left and stealing third in game two.
  • Heinlin earned her first win of the season in game two, striking out three Gaels in 5.0 innings.
