Softball Splits Doubleheader with Hawai’i

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside (12-22, 6-8 Big West) split Friday's doubleheader against Hawai'i with an 8-5 loss and 7-5 win in the first two games of a three-game series at Amy S. Harrison Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside jumped on the Rainbow Wahine out of the gate with a two-run RBI single in the first from Rebeca Cabezas. Bella Scozzola added a third run in the frame on a groundout and Gigi Araki made it 4-0 in the second after crossing home on a fielding error.
  • Kat Montuya singled to lead off what would turn into a perfect opportunity to do some damage in the third inning, but UCR was kept off the scoreboard despite putting runners at first and third.
  • Montuya redeemed herself in the fifth, however, and pulled a run back for the Highlanders on a steal of third that turned into a run on a botched throw – all of which followed her ninth double of the season.
  • UC Riverside was rocked in the first inning of game two by five runs for the Rainbow Wahine, but immediately broke up the shutout with a sacrifice fly from Araki in the bottom of the first.
  • The Highlanders turned to Maddie Heinlin in the circle, who picked up her fourth win of the season after retiring her first 11 batters in a stellar relief appearance.
  • UCR showed shades of last year's six-run comeback over Hawai'i, pinning a five-spot on the Rainbow Wahine in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. The Highlanders scored five runs on five hits in the frame while batting around.
  • Integral to the five-run outburst was Samiya Jones, who dug in as a pinch hitter before blooping a two-run single into right field on an 0-2 pitch.
  • Elise Nishimura sealed the deal in the fifth with her fifth RBI in her last four games.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UC Riverside has now won four of its last five heading into Saturday's series finale.
  • The Highlanders also reached the 10-win mark at Amy S. Harrison Field this season and are now 7-3 in their last 10 home games.
  • Montuya has now posted 10 doubles on the season after recording one in each of Friday's contests.
  • UCR's last two wins over Hawai'i have now come after trailing by at least five runs in each game.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside will look to take the series on Saturday, April 13 with a 1:00 p.m. rubber match on ESPN+.
