Baseball Falls to Cal Poly in Series Finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside (9-18, 0-9 Big West) fell, 3-8, to Cal Poly (18-12, 9-3 Big West) on Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex in the finale of the three-game series. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Anthony Mata went 4 for 5 with two RBIs in the series finale. The Highlanders belted out 10 hits from six players.  
  • UC Riverside cut Cal Poly's 2-0 lead in half in the third with a groundout from Zachary Chamizo that scored Sean Blandino.  
  • Mata went long on a 1-0 pitch in the fifth inning, scoring himself and Blandino, who singled up the middle for his fourth hit of the year. 
  • Bubba Rocha doubled down the right field line in the sixth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. 
  • Cole Koniarsky led off the eighth inning with a single that eventually resulted in a runner in scoring position.  

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Mata recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season and second against Cal Poly.  
  • Blandino made his fifth appearance and second start of the season – both against the Mustangs, going 2 for 2 with a pair of runs.
