Baseball Delivers Senior Day Walkoff Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (16-33, 6-21 Big West) walked off UC Davis on Sunday, May 19 with a dramatic 6-5 senior day victory at the Riverside Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR's offense began to take shape in the third with two runners left on base.
  • Rudy Rodriguez IV swung at the first pitch he saw in his third-inning plate appearances for a single to shortstop before entering scoring position with a steal of second. Nick Poss soon made it two aboard after registering the inning's second infield hit.
  • The Highlanders went three up and three down over the next two frames, but sprung ahead in the sixth with a pair of runs on back-to-back hits from Cole Koniarsky and Jayden Lopez.
  • UCR tacked on two more in the seventh on one swing of the bat, a two-run RBI single from Anthony Mata.
  • Sean Blandino roped his second triple of the season into center in the eighth and Rodriguez finished the job with an RBI single into right, giving UCR some late-game insurance on Senior Day.
  • UC Davis tied the ballgame in the top of the ninth, setting up more late game dramatics kicked off by Zachary Chamizo
  • Chamizo led off the bottom of the ninth with an opposite field single into left and quickly reached scoring position after Jacob Badawi perfectly executed the sacrifice bunt to move Chamizo over.
  • Mason Grace finished the job and brought Chamizo home with a lazy dropped fly ball into right field.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alfredo Capacete picked up his first win of the season by way of relieving Tyler Gebb on the mound in the top of the ninth.
  • Matthew Flores recorded four strikeouts in his 10th start of the season.
  • UC Riverside collected its third walkoff win of the season.
