Newcomers Impress in Season Opener against Idaho

Young talent shows promise on opening night vs. Vandals

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (August 15, 2024) - UC Riverside kicked off the 2024 season on Thursday night with a 3-0 loss to Idaho at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UCR's back line maintained a steady presence against Idaho's upstart attack early on. The Highlanders' front line, meanwhile, strung together a pair of promising chances in the seventh and ninth minutes. Braelynn Llamoca received a cross and later on, positive build up play turned into a chance that originated from a throw in.

Mimi Dominguez made an immediate impact in her Highlander debut with a constant presence on the ball, even at one point positioning herself in the face Idaho's goalkeeper to come face to face with a possible first collegiate goal. Eight minutes later, the freshman saw a hole in the near post but again came up short of an equalizer.

UC Riverside's offense generated a couple closer looks at goal in the 30th and 31st minutes. Macie Baird forced a corner that was headed away and worked out of the final third before Allee Grashoff came up with a one-on-one save on the other end of the pitch.

Grashoff was tested again in the 34th but the Vandals were called offside.

NOTABLES

  • Dominguez and Baird combined for five of UCR's six shots on the night.
  • Allee Grashoff made seven saves in goal for the Highlanders.
