Dominguez Scores Late to Seal Draw with Gauchos

Highlanders steal a point in final two minutes against UC Santa Barbara

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside claimed its third result of the season in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon with a 2-2 draw against UC Santa Barbara at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Santa Barbara found the back of the net in the fifth minute but was called offside just on the doorstep to have their early lead disallowed. The Highlander defense got the message and turned up the activity with its off-ball defending.
  • UCR got its first corner in the 24th minute as Santa Barbara's keeper could do nothing but send the ball over the end line to avoid danger.
  • The Highlanders entered the final third in the final 10 minutes of the first half and got a good look on goal despite not generating a shot. UC Riverside's lone shot of the opening 45 minutes came off Macie Baird's foot in the 24th minute.
  • Allee Grashoff made a highlight-worthy save on one of just six first half shots between the two sides after the Gauchos hit the crossbar seconds before. The highlight reel didn't stop there, as the sophomore saved a penalty to her left side moments later before Kyleigh Sekulich grabbed her first collegiate goal in the final 10 seconds of the half.
  • The lead was short lived as UC Santa Barbara leveled in the 48th minute and then went ahead in the 65th on a penalty.
  • Mimi Dominguez saved the day with UCR's second goal on Sunday in the final two minutes of a half, recovering a ball in the box and putting it past Santa Barbara's keeper for the late equalizer.
