RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The Highlanders welcomed the Hornets of Sacramento State to the IE and UCR looked to get its first conference win. The Highlanders held a 2-0 lead over UC San Diego earlier in the week and it ended in a draw. Tonight, UCR jumped out to another 2-0 lead, but this time held firm for the victory.
In the third minute,
Brady Elliott got the first shot on goal for UCR, but it was saved by the Hornets' keeper Andres Rosales.
Then in the 18'
Eric Martinez found the back of the net to give UCR an early 1-0 lead. For Martinez it was his second goal of the year and for
Wes Hastings it was his second assist.
In the 19'
Jakob Schnitzler made it 2-0 UCR on a shot to the lower left corner. For Schnitzler it was his first goal of the year and his first goal as a Highlander.
Eric Martinez picked up his third assist and
Brady Elliott collected his of the year.
Just like on Wednesday night against UCSD, the Highlanders scored twice in the first.
This time not only did UCR hold the lead but they added a third goal in the 55' off the foot of
Wes Hastings, his third goal of the year. Martinez picked up his second assist of the game and his fourth of the season.
UCR's keeper
Giancarlo Sagredo made a couple of big saves late to keep the shutout intact. The Hornets had a couple of shots late in the game, but not on target and for the Highlanders it was their third clean sheet of the season. For Sagredo it was his first win and clean sheet as a Highlander.
Next up for UCR is a trip to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night at 7PM.
