Highlanders Come Up Short to Cal Poly

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Highlanders returned home to the UCR Soccer Stadium for the penultimate home match against Cal Poly. The Mustangs entered the contest ahead of the Highlanders in the conference standings.

The first shot of the game came by Cal Poly in the 4' of play with Andrew Hermosillo making the save. Hermosillo had his first start in goal since October 4 at UC Santa Barbara.

The first UCR shot came in the 14' by Adrian Diaz and forced Cal Poly keeper Nicky McCune to come up with an early save. Diaz had another look at it and again McCune came up with the save.

A minute later Cal Poly's Cole Aman had a good look and Hermosillo kept them off the board.

UCR's next scoring opportunity came in the 34' off the foot of Jackson D'Alessandro but it, too, was saved and the first half ended, 0-0.

In their last match on Saturday night at UC Davis the Highlanders scored twice early in the second half. And tonight, they had a great opportunity off the foot of Andrija Radonjic within the first few minutes of the second half. He missed an open net to the right and Cal Poly survived.

Then a minute later in the 52' of the game the Mustangs broke the tie off the foot of Joaquin Torres. He scored off a set piece in the upper right corner of the goal and Cal Poly took a 1-0 lead.

The last best chance for UCR came in the 78' off the foot of Matti Richter but again McCune saved it and preserved the Mustangs' 1-0 win.

Next up for UCR is their final home match of the season when they host Cal State Bakersfield at 7PM. It will be senior night so be sure to come early for the ceremony.
