RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It was Senior Night tonight at the UCR Soccer Stadium as the Highlanders hosted Cal State Bakersfield in UCR's last home match of the year. Six seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony: Jakob Schnitzler, Jose Maria Rabadan, Grant Miller, Kevin Meza, Edward Castro and Wes Hastings.
Cal State Bakersfield came into the match with a conference record of 3-2-2. They were ahead of UC Riverside in the Big West standings and fighting for a spot in the postseason tournament. The Highlanders were 1-5-1 in the conference and had a slim chance to get into postseason play, but needed a win and some help.
The Roadrunners had a couple of shots early, but none on target. Their first shot on goal came in the 23' and Andrew Hermosillo made one of his four saves.Â
The Highlanders' offense did not record a shot on goal in the first half. They had a few chances, but none on target.
In the 65' Hermosillo made another great save on a shot by the Roadrunners' Jesse Wangusi. That was followed up by a Nathan Jimenez shot that bounced off the crossbar.
A few minutes later the Highlanders broke through on a beautiful pass by Edward Castro to Tarek Hamideh, who found the back of the net. It was UCR's second shot on goal and the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead. For Hamideh it was his first goal of the year and Castro tallied his third assist.
The Roadrunners had a few chances late as they applied more pressure. But between Hermosillo and the crossbar, Cal State Bakersfield could not tie the game. The Highlander keeper recorded his third clean sheet of the season.
Next up for UCR is the regular season finale at UC Irvine on Saturday, November 1 at 7PM.
