SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Highlanders and Mustangs clashed in the biggest match of the year on the California coast, with both teams fighting for a spot in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament. UC Riverside delivered when it mattered most, earning a 2-0 victory and securing its place in next week's tournament. The Highlanders finished the conference schedule with a 2-2-2 record.
Defense was the story of the first half, as the two teams combined for just five shots, with Cal Poly holding a slight 3-2 advantage. Both goalkeepers came up with early saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The Highlanders broke through in the 53' when Tarek Hamideh converted a penalty kick to give UC Riverside a 1-0 lead. The goal was Hamideh's team-leading sixth of the season and came on the Highlanders' first shot of the second half.
Just one minute later, in the 54', Wyatt Ponting found the back of the net past Cal Poly goalkeeper Dylan Glowaski to double the Highlanders' advantage.
From there, UC Riverside's defense held strong. The Mustangs' leading scorer, Finn Linas, hit the crossbar in the 64', while Giancarlo Sagredo came up with a big save in the 83'Â on a shot from Charlie Hogan to preserve the shutout.
The clean sheet was Sagredo's second of the season and the Highlanders' third as a team.
UC Riverside now turns its attention to the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament next week. For more information on the tournament, visit GoHighlanders.com and follow @ucrmsoccer on Instagram.
