RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside played to a wild 3-3 draw with Hawai'i on a chilly Sunday evening at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium.
UC Riverside stormed out of the gate offensively in Sunday's nightcap, holding a slight majority of its 47% first half possession in Hawai'i's half. Rylee Lewis drew a penalty in the seventh minute that stood after VAR, and Spenser Gonzales rolled her first goal of the season into the lower left corner with ease.
Sarah Mahfoud put a shot on frame in the 10th minute from inside the 18 as UCR continued controlling the ball.
The Highlanders' freshman connection took center stage in the 16th minute. Finley Aghassi placed a lofted set piece on the doorstep, and Mia DiLeo headed home her first collegiate strike for a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes.
Gonzales made it a brace in the 22nd with a right footer that skied over everyone and teardropped over the goal line.
Hawai'i erased the clean sheet in the 59th minute and drastically picked up its tempo in the last half hour. UH pulled another one back eight minutes later.
Morgan Kennedy subbed on in the 70th minute and provided an impressive spell of defense on the back line. The Rainbow Wahine gained possession in the 77th and pushed the ball upfield before Trinity Hale came off her line to secure the ball. Hawai'i finally equalized in the 87th minute to steal the point.
