UCR Drops Heartbreaker in 11, Split Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The finale of the four-game set with Utah Valley saw Charlie Dohemann take the mound for his first start of the year and his first appearance as a Highlander. UCR looked to keep the momentum going after last night's thrilling walk-off win.

Dohemann got into a bit of a jam in the first, as the game started out with a strikeout and error. Eventually, the Wolverines would get two in scoring position with two outs and Dohemann threw a wild pitch and UVU pushed one across. After surrendering a walk to put runners on the corners, Dohemann got out of the jam.

The Highlanders looked to get on the board in the bottom of the second as the first three runners reached base. A walk, hit by pitch and an infield single loaded the bases for Andrew Rivas. He hit a sac fly to center and drove in the Highlanders' first run of the game. With the game tied at one, last night's hero David Whittle stepped up and flew out to left. A double steal led to the Highlanders' second run scored, giving them a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the third, Utah Valley put runners on the corners and Dohemann's day was over giving way to Josh Martinez. The lefty hit the first batter he faced and load the bases for UVU. Martinez then struck out Nate Bach and got Mason Strong to fly out.

Robert Pitts led off the home half of the third with a leadoff double. He moved up to third on a ground out by Landon Nunes and Griffin Harrison stood up and drove home Pitts on a groundout to second giving UCR a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth inning Blake Avila hit what he thought was a home run, but the call on the field was foul. That sparked a conversation between UVU's coach Nate Rasmussen and the umpires that led to his early departure.

After Manaoh Chapman reached base on a walk the Wolverines went to the pen and summoned Cooper Littledike to face Andrew Rivas and got him to ground out to short. Whittle followed with a strikeout and the threat ended.

The Wolverines put the first two hitters on in their half of the fifth and Johnson again went to the bullpen calling on Nolan Milliman to try and get out of the inning unscathed. He got Jimmy De Anda to strikeout looking. The Wolverines executed a double steal of their own to pull within one, 3-2. Landon Frei then flew out to left, but Luke Iverson advanced to third and the tying run was 90 feet away. Milliman then hit Bach on a full count and runners were at the corners again. Bach stole second and the go-head run now was in scoring position. Milliman then got the ground ball he needed, but an error by Andrew Rivas allowed the tying run to score, 3-3. Milliman loaded the bases on a walk and Dominic Longo looked to give the Wolverines their first lead since they led 1-0 in the first.

The action picked back up for the Wolverines in the eighth with Mason Strong leading off with a double. CJ Colyer pinched hit for Avila and UCR went to the pen again and brought in Kurt Marton, who started game one on Friday night. Colyer singled to left and UVU threatened again with runners on the corner. With the count full to Dominic Longo, the Wolverine third baseman untied the game with one swing giving UVU a 6-3 lead. Luke Iverson followed up with the second homerun of the inning to center.

The Highlanders again went to the pen and called on Brent Godina to come and he got the final out of the inning. With the bleeding stopped UVU had a 7-3 lead over UCR.

Jayden Lopez led off the ninth with a single and eventually scored on a Manoah Chapman bloop single to left, cutting the UVU lead to 7-4. Rivas walked and Whittle came up with two on and one out. Whittle struck out swinging and the Highlanders last hopes rested with Ty Walton. He delivered with a double over the left fielder's head driving in two and cutting the lead to 7-6.

Pitts came up with a chance to tie. Looking for his first hit in the game, he tripled to tie the game at seven. Landon Nunes looked to end it in the ninth, but struck out swinging.

Free baseball, as we went to the tenth.

Nothing doing for the Wolverines in the top of the tenth and UCR had a chance to win in their half of the frame. The Highlanders went down quietly in the bottom of the tenth and we were headed for more.

In the visitor's half of the eleventh UVU took the lead on a single to left center by Landon Frei. Another pitching change for the Highlanders as Adrian Blanchet came into the game. This was UCR's eighth pitcher and Blanchet's first pitch to Colyer left the park, extending the UVU lead to 10-7.

UCR came up empty in the bottom of the eleventh and dropped the series finale, 10-7.

The Highlanders head out on the road to play Utah Tech in a four-game series starting Friday. Saturday will be a twin bill and the finale on Sunday. Check GoHighlanders.com for times.
