CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The UC Riverside Highlanders wrapped up the competition at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday with a pair of hard-fought games. The Highlanders jumped out to an early lead against Rutgers before falling 6-4, then turned in a strong defensive effort in a 4-1 setback to San Diego State.
GAME ONE: Rutgers 6, UC Riverside 4
UC Riverside took an early lead in the first inning, but Rutgers responded with steady offense to claim a 6-4 victory.
The Highlanders jumped ahead when
Trendee Kahunahana reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch, giving UC Riverside a 1-0 lead.
Haley Saole and
Rebeca Cabezas reached base, and
Mariana Palazuelos delivered an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Rutgers answered back with three runs in the second, tying the game, before adding two more in the fifth and another insurance run in the sixth.
Cabezas led the UC Riverside offense, going 2-for-3 with a triple, while
Kamryn Davis crushed a solo home run in the seventh inning to keep the Highlanders in the game. Saole and Palazuelos also added hits in the effort.
In the circle, Reagan Everett started strong, striking out five over three innings while allowing just one earned run.
Brooke Perez (1-5) took the loss in relief, giving up three runs in three innings while keeping the game close.
GAME TWO: San Diego State 4, UC Riverside 1
UC Riverside battled in its final game of the tournament but fell 4-1 against San Diego State.
Leilani Juan provided an offensive spark, doubling in the sixth inning before coming around to score on a single by Palazuelos. Cabezas had another stellar game, going 3-for-3, while Davis and Juan each added a hit.
On the defensive side, the Highlanders turned a key double play in the sixth inning to keep the game within reach.
Maddie Heinlin pitched a complete game, allowing just three earned runs on six hits while striking out four.
Despite opportunities in the later innings, including three walks drawn by Kahunahana, the Highlanders couldn't break through against San Diego State's pitching efforts.
