ST. GEORGE, Utah – UC Riverside concluded its four game series at Utah Tech today with a 4-0 win over the Trailblazers. For the Highlanders it was their first shutout of the year behind a solid outing by
Matthew Flores.
The junior righty out of Whittier, Calif., made his second start and earned his first collegiate win of his career. He threw 5.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out five and surrendering only four hits. Flores now leads the Highlanders in ERA (0.84) and strikeouts (14).
"Today's victory was a testament to the team's resilience and determination," UCR's
Justin Johnson said after the game. "The pitching performance was exceptional, particularly in the shutout, where Flores achieved his first collegiate win."
The offense for UCR when
Tyler Gordon scored on sac bunt by
Ethan Bergan. The Highlanders took their 1-0 lead to the sixth when they pushed two across giving them a 3-0 lead. The runs came when Gordon was hit by a pitch, scoring
Jayden Lopez. Began followed with a walk of his own, scoring
Andrew Rivas.
The fourth run came in the top of the seventh with Lopez singling to right field scoring
Landon Nunes.
From there the UCR pen slammed the door shut. Josh Martinez went three innings in relief striking out six and
Matt Hudson faced one batter and struck him out to end the game.
"Martinez's contributions from the bullpen were equally impressive and Hudson secured the final out," Johnson added. "The team's ability to bounce back from Friday's loss and sweep a double-header yesterday was great and their performance today was outstanding."
The win gives UCR a modest three game winning streak and momentum for a Wednesday night battle against LMU. Game time is 6:30 p.m., and you can
