Women’s Basketball Punches Postseason Ticket with Win over Hawai’i

Wickstrom, Duchemin combine for 32 points in victory over Big West leaders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside clinched a spot in the Big West Championship on Thursday night with a 61-51 win over Hawai'i at the SRC Arena.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UC Riverside found its offensive legs late in the first quarter with an up and under layup by Hannah Wickstrom and a three from up top by Esther Matarranz.  
  • UCR cut the lead to three in the second quarter on the back of an 11-2 run in just over four minutes. The Highlanders' fight continued at the other end of the floor, as they held Hawai'i to just one attempt through the first three minutes of the second quarter.  
  • Maya Chocano pulled up for three in the final minute of the first half to give UCR its first lead of the evening at 26-24.  
  • UCR hit five of six field goal attempts in the third quarter after starting 0 for 2 from the floor, continuing to go neck and neck with Hawai'i.  
  • Wickstrom dialed one up from three late in the third quarter as part of a quarter-ending 8-0 scoring spurt for the Highlanders. She and Makayla Rose took charge of the scoring in the run.  
  • UC Riverside rattled off three quick triples to open the fourth quarter and a 10-point lead on the Big West leaders, while holding them to one of their previous 10 field goal attempts.  
  • UCR all but sealed the deal with a corner three from Kaylani Polk, bringing about a 13-point advantage.  

NOTABLES 

  • UC Riverside secured a second straight season split with the Rainbow Wahine and has now won four of its last five overall while ending Hawai'i's 14-game win streak. 
  • The Highlanders overcame a nine-point first quarter deficit to go into halftime tied for the first time all season.  
  • UCR outscored Hawai'i 17-6 in the second quarter while shooting 41.2% and outrebounding the Rainbow Wahine 12-4. UCR's shooting success continued with a 50% clip in the third quarter. 
  • The Highlanders also bested Hawai'i off the bench, 28-13.
