UC Riverside Softball Welcomes Full Coaching Staff for the 2025 Season

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The UC Riverside Highlanders' softball program is thrilled to announce the addition of a talented coaching staff under the leadership of first-year head coach Brittney Matta. These dynamic individuals bring diverse backgrounds and expertise, setting the stage for an exciting new era of Highlanders softball.

"I am thrilled to welcome all three of these wonderful people to my staff at UC Riverside," said coach Matta. "The people around you are crucial to building the future of programs and I know each one of them will meet the expectations I have. They are young, motivated and eager to help influence the young women in the program for the better."

Tyler Smith
Joining as an Assistant Coach, Tyler Smith brings a wealth of knowledge from his playing and coaching experiences. Smith will oversee the development of UCR's infielders. As the son of renowned California Baptist University head coach Mike Smith, Tyler continues the family tradition of mentoring student-athletes. A former pitcher, Smith played two seasons at Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, winning an MACJC state championship, and later at Limestone University in South Carolina, where he earned a degree in Sport Management. He further honed his coaching skills as a graduate assistant at California Baptist University, where he earned his Masters Degree.

Alexia "Lexi" Morales
Alexia Morales joins UCR as an Assistant Coach specializing in outfielders, left-handed hitters, and slappers. A former standout outfielder at UTEP, Morales boasts an impressive collegiate resume. During her career, she maintained a .308 batting average, ranked among UTEP's top players in several statistical categories, and earned numerous academic honors, including being named a Conference USA All-Academic Team member. Morales holds a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and is pursuing a Master of Science in Forensic DNA Analysis and Serology.

Nicholas Sanchez
Rounding out the staff is Nicholas Sanchez, who brings a robust background in pitching and data-driven coaching. Sanchez, a graduate of Arizona State University, is currently pursuing a Master's in Athletic Coaching from the University of South Carolina. His prior experience includes working with collegiate programs at Arizona State and South Carolina, as well as professional softball through Athletes Unlimited. Sanchez excels in using advanced tools like Yakkertech, Rapsodo, and Trackman to develop player performance, alongside his expertise in pitch calling and logistics.

Together, this coaching staff brings a shared commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, development, and success for the Highlanders softball program. Head coach Brittany Matta and her team are ready to build upon UCR's strong foundation and elevate the program to new heights.

Join the Highlanders for Lynn R. Miller Opening Day this Saturday, February 8th, featuring a doubleheader against Army with first pitch set for at 11 a.m.
