UCR Comes up Short in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- The Highlanders traveled north the CSU Bakersfield for the second and  final meeting of the year. UCR looked to bounce back from a tough loss at the hands of UC San Diego a couple of days prior. The Roadrunners entered the game with only one win on the year and a big third quarter guided CSU Bakersfield to a five point lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Highlanders got off to a quick start taking an eight point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Roadrunners struck first, then UCR went on a 7-0 lead, that included five points by Hannah Wicktrom. UCR took a 12-4 lead at the end of one.
  • In the second, with the lead built up, both teams went back and forth with baskets. The scoring was balanced for UCR and at the end of the first. Both Wickstrom and Seneca Hackely scored eight in the first half.
  • The third quarter continued to be a nemesis for UCR. The Roadrunners offense came out on fire outscoring UCR 24-11. The Highlanders went nearly three minutes without a bucket until Zoe Tillery hit a layup at the 2:18 mark, giving UCR a 44-38 lead. CSU Bakersfield ended the quarter on an 8-0 run 46-44 lead going into the final quarter.
  • The Highlanders tied the game up early in the fourth on a couple of free throws by Shelley Duchemin and took a one point lead on a free throw by Jordyn Marshall. UCR found itself up by four on a jumper by Tillery at the 7:50 mark. Marshall added another free throw and increased the lead to five. The Roadrunners, however, would go on a 16-6 run to close out the game and earn their second victory of the year.
