Baseball Splits Sunday against Utah, California Baptist

Pitts leads Highlanders to Crosstown Showdown in nightcap

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (8-5, 0-0 Big West) split games against Utah and California Baptist on a busy Sunday at the Riverside Baseball Complex, falling 17-7 to the Utes before downing the Lancers, 7-4. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UCR put runners on the corners in the third against Utah for Griffin Harrison, who one-hopped a double into left field for the Highlanders' first run of the afternoon. 
  • The Highlanders collected back-to-back leadoff singles in the third and fourth innings.  
  • David Whittle brought UC Riverside back into the contest later in the frame with a three-run shot to left field in the fourth inning.  
  • Landon Nunes and Michael Weber traded places in the bottom of the sixth. Nunes slapped an RBI double through the right side. 
  • Matthew Flores picked off a runner at first to start the Crosstown Showdown, and UCR threatened in the bottom of the frame thanks to two stolen bases from Robert Pitts.  
  • Pitts doubled down the left field line in the fourth inning to bring Ethan Bergan in from first to tie the game after CBU homered.  
  • UC Riverside put up three more runs in the third inning on a trio of RBI doubles before CBU pulled one back in the fourth and tied it up in the fifth.  
  • Jayden Lopez and UC Riverside punched back in the fifth with a go-ahead RBI single to center, the first of two Highlander runs in the frame. UC Riverside tacked on two more in the sixth as well to break the game open, 7-3. 
  • Matt Hudson recorded his third save of the year and second against CBU.  

NOTABLES 

  • UC Riverside has now won six of its last eight after moving to 2-0 in the Crosstown Showdown this season.  
  • James Appleford and Marco DiGirolamo made their debuts on the bump for UC Riverside against the Utes.  
  • Five Highlanders had multi-hit games against Utah, included Whittle who added three RBIs.  
  • Robert Pitts put up a quality stat line against the Lancers, going 4 for 5 with two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
