RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In an epic conclusion to the Big West weekend series, the UC Riverside Highlanders walked off CSUN in the bottom of the 11th inning on
Trendee Kahunahana's solo home run, earning a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Highlanders matched CSUN with eight hits apiece and delivered in the clutch to claim the series finale.
After falling behind 2-0 through three innings, UC Riverside began to chip away. In the bottom of the third,
Eta Lauti launched her second home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line to cut the deficit in half.
The Highlanders tied the game in the sixth. Lauti was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a groundout by
Rebeca Cabezas, and came around to score on an RBI single from
Haley Saole.
UC Riverside threatened multiple times in extra innings — including loading the bases in the seventh and putting the winning run aboard in the ninth — but finally broke through in the bottom of the 11th when Kahunahana sent a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall, igniting a celebration at home plate.
Jackie Alday finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a stolen base, while Saole drove in a run. Cabezas and Allysa Alano added base hits as well.
Brooke Perez (3-5) earned the win in relief, tossing eight shutout innings while allowing just four hits and one walk, striking out three.
The Highlanders open their series against Hawai'i on Friday, April 4
th with first pitch set for 9pm in Manoa, Hawai'i.
