Duarte Leads Tournament After First Two Rounds of Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. – The UC Riverside Highlanders made a significant start in the team standings after a strong second round at Copper River Country Club, jumping into second place with a 15-shot team improvement. Mitzi Duarte leads the field of 45 competitors, following up her opening-round 70 with another 2-under 70 to sit alone atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under through 36 holes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mitzi Duarte leads the field at 140 (-4) after rounds of 70-70. Her second round featured five birdies, including back-to-back red numbers on holes 14 and 15.
Janna Andaya bounced back in a big way, following her 79 (+7) in Round 1 with a sharp 70 (-2) in Round 2.
Sophia Luna, after an opening 75 (+3), carded a 76 (+4) in Round 2 and is tied for 14th.
Maleyna Gregorio recorded rounds of 79-75 (+10 total) and sits just outside the top 20 in solo 21st.
Sofia Vargas climbed 14 spots with a 73 (+1), putting her in a tie for 22nd with teammate Gabrielle Kiger who competed as an individual and posted 78-77 across the first two rounds.

NOTABLES

Duarte is the only player in the field with two rounds in red figures and holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round.
UC Riverside's 288 (E) in Round 2 was the lowest team round of the day, helping them cut significantly into the lead and position themselves for a final-day push.
The Highlanders now sit just one shot off the lead and have four players inside the top 25 and two in the top 10.
