RIVERSIDE, Calif. –The UC Riverside Highlanders capped off the weekend with a balanced 5-1 victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field, earning the Big West series win behind a three-RBI performance from
Trendee Kahunahana and another complete game from
Maddie Heinlin.
The Highlanders struck early with two runs in the first. Kahunahana singled and stole second, then scored on an RBI double by
Haley Saole, who later came home on a single up the middle from
Mariana Palazuelos.
After adding a run in the fourth on another RBI single from Kahunahana, UC Riverside broke things open in the sixth.
Eta Lauti doubled to left field and scored on a single by
Rebeca Cabezas, before Kahunahana added her third hit of the day — an RBI triple to right field to make it 5-1.
Kahunahana finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Lauti went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs, while Palazuelos also had a multi-hit game. UC Riverside totaled 10 hits on the day and stole two bases.
In the circle, Heinlin (10-10) continued her strong stretch, tossing her second complete game of the weekend. The junior scattered seven hits over seven innings, allowing just one run while striking out five with no walks.
The Highlanders played clean defense and made timely plays to strand seven Mustang baserunners, including a pair in scoring position in the sixth.
UC Riverside returns to action next weekend for a three-game road series at Long Beach State with a double header beginning Friday, April 18
th with first pitch set for 3pm.
