RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UCR came in on a high note against UNLV. They had a scrappy win against UC San Diego on Saturday and looked to build off that victory. This was the second time this year that these two teams played, with UNLV taking the first game in Vegas, 10-4. This time, the Highlanders had a four-run lead in the top of the ninth and they could not hold the lead.
A five-run top of the ninth by UNLV secured the 7-6 win.
UCR took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when
Manoah Chapman singled to right scoring both
Robert Pitts and
Diego Boardman.
The Rebels got the two runs back in the top of the fourth on a single and a sac-fly.
In the home half of the fifth, the Highlanders struck for four runs.
David Whittle doubled off the centerfield wall scoring
Jacob Badawi and
Landon Nunes. Then Boardman singled up the middle scoring
Isaiah Hernandez and Whittle making it 6-2.
UCR was in cruise control until the ninth when UNLV came up with some clutch hits and scored on a passed ball.
The Highlanders could not answer in the bottom of the ninth and they now are 13-25 on the year. Next up is a three game set at Sacramento State that starts on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
