RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside honored student-athletes today in an on-campus ceremony. The athletes, along with families and friends, gathered in the Johnson Family Practice Center to celebrate their collective accomplishments.
Together 75% of the student-athletes earned a GPA above a 3.0 and as a class, earned an average GPA of 3.25. "You have studied diligently and persevered through countless challenges," said Michelle Almazan, Senior Associate Athletics Director, Student-Athlete Services/SWA.Â
The student-athletes represent every college on the UCR campus and nearly half of the them are graduating with honors.Â
Almazan, presented the R'Scholar Award. This award is given to student-athletes who exemplify academic excellence based on overall UC units completed and cumulative GPA during their time at UCR. "This year we are proud to honor two outstanding student-athlete scholars - one male and one female - both graduating with the highest academic distinction and near perfect GPAs."
The awards went to Esther Matarranz (women's basketball) and Aarav Sane (men's tennis).Â
Almazan shared a quote about Matarranz from her coach Brad Langson. " She embodies what it means to be a true student-athlete at UCR. Her dedication and discipline in the classroom, along with her unwavering commitment to our program's success both on and off the court, makes her a standout example of excellence in every area."
Matarranz was a Highlander for four years and will graduate with a degree in electrical engineering. After school, she plans to continue her athletic career in Spain.Â
Like Matarranz, Sane started at UCR as a freshman. He, too, worked through the demands of being a student-athlete. One of the leaders of the men's tennis team Almazan said that Sane made a lasting impact on the UCR community.Â
"His is nothing short of inspirational - both on and off the court. He has maintained a near perfect GPA while growing as a fantastic leader and player for our program," Almazan shared from men's tennis coach Mattias Johansson. "He is one of those special student-athletes you never want to see graduate because of the incredible talent and leadership he brings."
