Women’s Soccer Closes Road Trip with Loss at Utah Tech

Highlander defense shows grit for second straight match

ST. GEORGE, Utah – UC Riverside turned in another scrappy defensive performance on Sunday evening in a 2-0 defeat to Utah Tech at Greater Zion Stadium.

UCR played on its back foot from the opening kickoff against an aggressive Utah Tech side, and the Trailblazers capitalized with the opening goal in the seventh minute.

Daisy Miller proved pivotal ever since coming off the bench in the 18th minute. The Temecula native inserted herself into a slowly building offense and created promising chances on the far side.

Miller's play inspired a high press halfway through the first half and created several looks while giving a solid back line some much needed rest. Miller saw a chance to bag her first UCR goal  just before halftime after winning a 1v1 with Utah Tech's keeper, but rolled it wide over the endline.

Audrey Stewart also took her turn at a clear look on goal in the closing minutes as the Highlanders continued to press.

UCR emerged from halftime with a revitalized offense, backed by a continued defensive pressure. The Highlanders earned their first corner early in the second half after Sanaa Guyness played a great ball into Rylee Lewis, but too far for the Idaho State transfer. Lauren Nguyen began the half with valuable minutes, clogging passing lanes on the defensive end.

Trinity Hale relieved Talisa Perez in goal at halftime and knocked away a shot in the 57th minute, before Kayla Kanaly instrumented a messy goal line clearance off the corner to limit the damage.

Macie Baird was clear in on goal for the Highlanders' best chance of the night in the 71st minute, but couldn't finish the job in the box. Utah Tech doubled its lead shortly after in the 72nd.

UCR now turns the page to Thursday's 7:30 pm home opener against UTEP at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium. Tickets are on sale now at gohighlanders.com/tickets
