EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Highlanders opened up the 2025 campaign against the Michigan State Spartans. This was the first meeting between these two schools since 2018, when MSU won 5-1.
A couple of firsts today for the Highlanders.
Andrew Hermosillo got his first career start in goal, after playing in only one match last year. Also, freshman
Eric Martinez started in his first collegiate match.
Through the first ten plus minutes of the match the Spartans controlled possession, but the Highlanders' defense was solid. UCR looked to take advantage of its speed on the outside and tried to counterattack when possible.
The Spartans started to build up momentum mid-way through the first half, as Michigan State had great chances and again the Highlanders held firm. Through the first 20-minutes of the opening half Michigan State out shot UCR 4-0.
The first shot on goal for UCR came in the 21' by
Kevin Meza. A great save by the Spartans reigning Big 10 Goalkeeper of the Year, Zac Kelly kept the Highlanders off the board.
In the 24' the Spartans had their fourth corner kick of the half on a great defensive play by
Ermias Yohannes. Without that challange, MSU could have had an open net.
A dangerous corner by Michigan State led to their best chance to score up until that point, as Hermosillo was there with another great save. He followed up with another great save on a clean look by Jake Spadafora in the 29'.
MSU scored first on a UCR own goal off a deflection that took an odd bounce off the crossbar putting the Spartans up, 1-0.
UCR started with the second half kick, as they looked to have more time of possession in the offensive end.
MSU scored early in the second half on the second own goal of the game on a cross pass by Chimnosoh Okeke, putting the Spartans up 2-0.
After that goal both teams traded possessions. UCR's first shot of the second came in the 70' off the foot of
Ethan Walker. In the 85'
Wes Hastings had an opportunity in tight, but it was blocked by the MSU defense. That was the Highlanders' last best look in the game, as it ended 2-0.
