UCR Shuts Out UNLV, 2-0

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Highlanders looked to get into the win column as they traveled to UNLV to take on the Rebels. For UCR tonight marked the 13th time they faced UNLV and both won six times.

The first great chance of the game came in the 13' off a corner kick when the ball found space just outside the box, but the Rebels sent it over the crossbar.

The Highlanders forced a turnover in the offensive zone in the 25' to earn a corner kick and had a chance to score, but the Rebels' defense held up. Both Brady Elliott and Edward Castro had chances, but both were blocked.

In the 28' the Rebels forced a turnover and got it deep in the UCR defensive end but could not get a shot off. The Highlanders countered and Wyatt Ponting had a shot blocked. After UNLV's Thomas Lebeuf received a yellow card UCR had a chance from a set piece. Tarek Hamideh missed the target high and right and the scored remained 0-0.

Which is how the first half ended.

In the 49' the Highlanders struck first. Jackson D'Alessandro found the back of the net giving UCR a 1-0. For the Highlanders it was the first time they scored first this season and the second straight game they held a one goal advantage. For D'Alessandro it was his first goal of the year and the third different Highlander to score.

After UCR's goal, the intensity on both sides picked up. UNLV got more aggressive, and the Highlanders held firm.

In the 76' the Highlanders had another chance to add on to their lead on another crossing pass but again came up empty. Again, UCR kept the pressure up and again UNLV's defense responded.

Andrew Hermosillo came up with some big saves on several UNLV chances late to keep the clean sheet alive. The Rebels found an extra gear it looked like.

In the 83' Adrian Diaz put one on net, but UNLV's keeper Hugo Lemos came up with the save.

However, three minutes later a defensive miscue by Lemos allowed Eric Martinez to come up with the ball, he went across the box and found paydirt.

And that is how it ended, UCR 2-0 over UNLV. The win was the first for the Highlanders in 2025 and it snapped the three-game losing streak to the Rebels. Next up for UCR is San Diego State on Monday at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is 7PM.
