RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresh of their 2-0 win at UNLV the Highlanders welcomed San Diego State to campus for a Monday night match. UCR came in unbeaten in their previous two, while SDSU entered the contest on a two-game skid.
The Highlanders struck first, in the 7', as
Adrian Diaz put it just under the crossbar in the right corner to give UCR a 1-0. It was Diaz's first of the year and it was UCR's first game of te season scoring in the first half.
Then the Highlanders scored again, this time in the 21'.
Eric Martinez broke free down the left side of the pitch and crossed it beautifully to
Edward Castro who redirected it into the net, giving UCR a 2-0 lead. Castro had a great first half for UCR with a goal and an assist.
UCR had a couple of more chances but could not capitalize and took a 2-0 lead at half.
In the second half, SDSU turned up the pressure. They had a great chance in the 61' when Josh Lucas put one on target, but UCR's
Andrew Hermosillo came up with the save, preserving the clean sheet.
The Aztecs kept the pressure up when off a throw in as Juan Zepeda's header just missed.
In the 67' Jose Maria Rabadan had a clean look at the goal but sent it over the crossbar. For UCR it was one of their better chances in the second half. Then in the 68' UCR's
Eric Martinez had a break-away and drifted towards the center of the box and the Highlanders ended up with a corner kick.
In the 71' an awkward shot by SDSU led to a loose ball deep in the box, but SDSU's Tristan Viviani missed high over the crossbar.
The Highlanders received a penalty kick in the 72' min as Rabadan was fouled in the box.
Wes Hastings stepped up to take the PK but missed over the goal.
The Aztecs put together a late charge in the final two minutes, but the Highlanders defense held strong, and the game ended, 2-0.
For the Highlanders it was their second straight win and their second straight clean sheet.
