FULLERTON, Calif. – The Highlanders traveled to the OC this afternoon for a matinee against Cal State Fullerton. The Titans and Highlanders entered the game tied in the conference loss column and this afternoon's result may have Big West Tournament implications down the line.
Hannah Wickstom dropped 28 and Makayla Minshall scored a career high 18 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a balanced scoring attack from the Titans. UCR fell 83-71.
Cal State Fullerton had five players score in double figures with Cristina Jones leading they scoring 22 points.
The game started back and forth until the final 2:47 of the first when the Titans closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run, taking a 22-16 lead.
In the second quarter Cal State Fullerton built a nine point lead early, but UCR chipped away. The Highlanders got it to a one point deficit on a layup by Minshall. The teams then traded baskets and UCR got it back to a one point deficit on free throws by Wickstrom.
UCR had a tough time scoring in the third only putting up seven points through the first six plus minutes. By that time, Cal State Fullerton built up 56-41 lead. Maya Chocano hit a three to try and chip away at it, but Fullerton answered back and took a 16 point lead into the fourth.
In the fourth the Titans increased their lead to 21 points, 82-61 and it was too much for UCR to overcome.
Next up for the Highlanders is a trip to the Bren Center to take on UC Irvine on Thursday. Game time is 6PM.
