SEATTLE, Wash. – The Highlanders traveled to Washington for a pair of games this weekend, opening their trip at Seattle U against the Redhawks of the West Coast Conference. According to GoHighlanders.com, this marked the second all-time meeting between the two programs, with UC Riverside claiming a 58-54 victory in the first matchup back in 2016. Tonight, however, the Redhawks came out on top, 80-55, handing the Highlanders their first loss of the season.
Seattle U opened the game with a 7-0 run before Graecyn Parahi got the Highlanders on the board with a layup to make it 7-2. The Redhawks closed the first quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 23-12 lead. Both teams went cold offensively during a stretch of nearly three minutes in the opening period.
The Highlanders found some offensive rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 17 points behind a strong performance from Kaylani Polk. Polk led UCR with seven points in the period, going a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. She also added two rebounds.
UC Riverside continued to battle in the third quarter, scoring another 17 points while holding the Redhawks to fewer than 20. Taylor Swanson paced the Highlanders with six points on 3-for-5 shooting. UCR cut the deficit to 11 points twice during the quarter, but Seattle U responded each time, extending its advantage to 63-46 heading into the fourth.
The Highlanders struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the final quarter as Seattle U pulled away to secure the victory.
UP NEXT: UC Riverside will travel to Spokane, Wash., to take on Gonzaga this Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2PM. The game will be streamed live on YouTube through the Pac-12 channel.
