LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Highlanders hit the road for a three game set at UC San Diego and dropped the first game 12-6. A combined ten runs in the fifth and sixth innings was too much for UC Riverside to overcome.
Jaxon Byrd got the start for the Highlanders and went 2.2 innings giving up one earned run. It came on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.Â
UC Riverside tied the game up in the second inning on a homer off the bat of
Lucas Bonham. With the count 1-2 the third baseman it over the left field wall. It was Bonham's third homer of the season and he now leads the team.
The big blow for the Tritons came in the fifth inning when Deishaun Lanier hit a grand slam and Addison Klepsch hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the eighth
Evan Hall doubled to left scoring
Robert Pitts and later in the inning
Miles Scott singled to right scoring Hall.Â
In the Highlanders' ninth
Ty Walton doubled to right center driving in both
Andrew Rivas and
Hunter Backstrom. Later in the inning
Jarren Sanderson scored on a throwing error by Thomas Maher, but it wasn't enough.
Next up is game two tomorrow afternoon at 2PM.
Matthew O'Brien gets the nod for UC Riverside.
