Tim Downey was named UC Riverside's Head Men's Tennis Coach on June 20, 2012 following collegiate stops at UC Irvine and Saddleback College.
In his first year with the Highlanders, Downey guided three players to Big West All-Conference honors: Julian Ruffin (honorable mention, singles), Luis Gastao (honorable mention, doubles), and Calvin Ngo (honorable mention, doubles).
Downey served as Assistant and Head Men’s Tennis Coach at Saddleback College from 2002-2006, and was an Assistant Coach for the UC Irvine’s Women’s Tennis program from 2006-2011.
While at Saddleback, Downey was named 2005 Orange-Empire Conference Coach of the Year, with his team earning Team National Academic Honors.
After joining UC Irvine in 2006, the Anteaters won the Big West regular season championship earning its highest-ever national ranking of #28, and garnering its first-ever birth in the NCAA Championship.
In 2010, Downey helped guide UCI to the Big West Tournament title and another bid to the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his coaching stops on the collegiate level, Downey coached multiple senior players to national titles and #1 Sectional and National rankings. He also taught juniors and adults for over 30 years in Orange County.
Downey began his collegiate career at USC, and after transferring to Saddleback College, played both #1 singles and doubles for two seasons. His performance earned him All-Conference and All-American status, and eventually a spot in the Gauchos Athletics Hall of Fame. He later earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix.
Downey is married to
Sue Morgan, a former four-sport athlete at UC Riverside, who was inducted into the UCR Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
