Carter Shaw joined the Highlanders staff as an assistant women's basketball coach following one year as the top assistant coach at Colgate University.
Prior to Colgate, Shaw spent two seasons at Ball State (2008-10), helping the Cardinals compile a 40-26 overall record, including a 25-12 mark in the Mid-American Conference. Shaw helped Ball State to the most successful season in school history in 2008-09 when the Cardinals won the MAC Championship and the schools first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament, defeating Tennessee 71-55 in the first round.
Shaw was an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara for six seasons before he was hired at Ball State. While involved in all facets of the program during his tenure on staff, his most recent duties included coordinating all aspects of recruiting, scheduling opponents, team equipment and apparel and director of summer camps. Shaw spent three seasons as the Gauchos offensive coordinator while also working with post and wing player skill development. As an assistant at UCSB, Shaw coached three future WNBA players as well as several others who spent time playing overseas.
Prior to his arrival to UC Santa Barbara, Shaw was an assistant coach at Colorado State University from 2000-02 where his duties included player development, game scouting, video breakdown and film exchange, assisting with the offensive systems and directing all phases of summer camps.
From 1997-2000, Shaw was an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Utah. His duties at Utah ranged from coordinating the managers and scout team to film exchange, team and positional video breakdown, directing the Dribble with the Utes outreach program to elementary schools, summer camps, liaison to the strength and conditioning, marketing and sports information staffs and assisting with on court and post player development.
Shaw, who earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in 1995, assisted the varsity and was the head coach of the freshmen and junior varsity boy’s teams at Intermountain Christian High School (1992-95, 1996-97). He also served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at the University of Utah (1995-96).
Shaw and his wife, Rebecca, have one son (Micah).
