The longest-tenured head coach in the current UCR family, Mark Henry just completed his 28th year in the Inland Empire in 2022. Henry began at UCR with the men's team in 1994 and took over the women's program two years later in 1996.
He coached the men's program up until 2001, and has been solely the women's head coach since 2002.
Henry has taken eight teams to NCAA Regionals in his UCR career. He has coached an All-American, a UCR Female Athlete of the Year, two ITA Regional Rookies of the Year, three ITA Arthur Ashe Award Winners for Leadership and Sportsmanship, one ITA Cissier Leary Award winner and numerous ITA Academic and all-conference performers.
Five of Henry's teams have been nationally ranked, and since joining the Big West in 2001-02, the Highlanders' women's program has had 13 All-Big West singles selections and seven doubles selections, including four-time singles honoree Michelle Beyronnaeu (2002-05) and three-time singles honoree Casey Cross (2004-06).
In the classroom, Henry's teams have earned six ITA All-Academic Team honors and more than 20 ITA Scholar-Athlete awards on top of a Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American and two Harper Award recipients (UCR Scholar-Athlete of the Year).
A graduate of Whittier College, Henry became the head coach of the Poets in 1987 (1987-89) after returning from graduate school at Indiana University. He then moved on to work with nationally ranked programs UC Irvine (1989-92) and Cal Poly Pomona (1992-93).
A two-time Division II West Region Coach of the Year, Henry won the honor with the women’s program in 1997 and with the men’s program in 1998.
Henry has three children, Aaron, Michael, and Jillian. He resides in Alta Loma with his wife and daughter. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf, tennis, and spending time with his family.
