Brandon Dowdy's 14 points led three Highlanders in double-figure scoring as UC Riverside won its home-opener over Sacramento State, 61-49. It was the sixth win in eight home openers for the program since making the transition to Division I.
Defensive pressure was the name of the game as UCR forced the Hornets into 23 turnovers on the night, limiting them to just 37 total shots. That translated into a 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside never trailed after permitting the Hornets to score the first basket of the game, but the game remained close for most of the first half. The Highlanders went on a 13-2 run late in the period to open up a 13-point lead with 1:45 left. Five different players scored during the run and UCR entered the break up by nine.
The Highlanders scored the initial bucket of the second half to push their lead back to double figures, but the Hornets countered with a 9-2 run and trailed by just two with 15:06 to go in the game.
It was still a two-point game with 8:25 left, but the Highlanders scored the next seven points to effectively put the game out of reach.
Javon Borum chipped in with 12 points for UCR while Aaron Scott added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the win.
